Praia D'el Rey is situated on Portugal's unspoiled west coast and less than one hours drive from Lisbon International Airport. The area is known as the Silver Coast - or Costa da Prata in Portuguese - and the natural attractions of the Atlantic setting include great golf courses, huge beaches, surfing and body-boarding and some fabulous diving off the nearby Berlengas Islands.
The Silver Coast is quiet and spacious, when compared with other Portuguese holiday areas It's less developed (although this is now starting to change) and the local towns and villages retain their traditional character. Please see the next page for some ideas of local towns to visit, shop and eat in.
The local Praia Del Rey beach stretches for many miles in both directions from the resort and is excellent for sunbathing, walking and surfing. The beach is rarely crowded, even at the height of the season and we usually spend a good part of our holiday playing with our children on the beach. The beach is patrolled during the peak season and a lifeguard is based at the beachaccess point beneath the Marriott Hotel and also at Vila da Praia. The Atlantic Ocean can be very rough and guests should pay close attention to the warning flags displayed by the lifeguards.
More excellent beaches are nearby at Baleal, which is our favourite surfing and body boarding spot. The drive takes about fifteen minutes and it does tend to get crowded at peak season, with surfers from all over Europe congregating here, but its great fun! Just near the beach, there is also one of our favourite restauarants - the Gauchao de Picanha - but its only for meat lovers!
The on-site 5 star Marriott Hotel is a great place to hang out and use their facilities including the great view across the Atlantic, a choice of several bars and restaurants and the wonderful Atlantic Coast Spa. On site, there is also a choice of dining experiences at the Clubhouse - pizzas/pasta/burger type food, plus a more formal dining area.
The closest off-site restaurants are a 10 minute drive away in Serra D'el Rey and tend to be a little cheaper than the on-site ones.
On the Praia D'el Rey site the 18 hole par 72 championship links course is rated among the best in Europe. With spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands, it offers a challenging round of golf for all standards of player. Nearby, the new Bom Sucesso course opened in September 2008 and is a 20 minute drive away. Please be aware that the courses require a handicap certificate.
