Three nearby towns worthy of a visit include;
OBIDOS
The preserved medieval walled town of Obidos just 10 minutes drive from Praia Del Rey and has a year-round calendar of events including Medieval Markets, Opera, a Piano festival and the famous Chocolate Festival. From the walls, visitors can enjoy views of vineyards and surrounding farmlands. The town has retained its own character and charm as an unspoiled part of Portuguese history.
CALDAS DA RAINHA
Caldas is a 15 minute drive away and is one place we always visit – usually several times! It has a market every day in the central square selling fruit, vegetables, nuts, cheese, flowers, sausages and cakes. This is one of our favourite haunts and we always partake of the local cakes, which are really excellent – especially the regional speciality of Pastis de Nata. It's all fresh, local produce and great bargains can be had. Caldas is also excellent for clothes shopping with branches of many well known retailers and a wide variety of other shops selling shoes, sports goods, kids and casual clothes etc. There are 3 or 4 large supermarkets on the outskirts of the town, so you can stock up for your holiday. There is also a newly opened cinema (Vivaci), with recent release films in English, and a ten-pin bowling alley.
PENICHE
Peniche is Portugal’s largest fishing port and the industry dominates the town. It is great to take a walk along the sea wall before repairing to one of the many harbour-side restaurants for fresh fish cooked on a barbecue at the roadside.
